This crop must be placed on tilled netherrack (Gold or Diamond hoe) with a lava source nearby to "hydrate" the tile as though it were water. It can be grown in either dimension.
Upon harvesting it you'll get some Quarz Berries! Which you can use to make nether quartz by mixing it with glass like this:
